Transform RFK lots into public athletic fields and green space.
There is not enough space for youth and adults sports. DC should rip out the asphalt lots and replace with usable green space and fields. This would substantially reduce storm water into the Anacostia and provided needed facilities for residents.

Install rain gardens, curb cuts, and permeable pavement in streets and sidewalks to reduce stormwater runoff and recharge aquifers
By installing rain gardens, curb cuts, and permeable pavement in our streets, storm water runoff could be dramatically reduced. This would enhance drinking water quality, reduce pollution, reduce wastewater treatment volume, improve flora and fauna, and reduce flooding. These initiatives are realatively cheap and easy to implement durring the course of scheduled street maintenance. Many of these practices are currently being used in many local governments. More information can be found at EPA's Stormwater page http://cfpub.epa.gov/npdes/home.cfm?program_id=6

Stop watering sidewalks to clean them - use a broom!
Each time I walk to work in the morning, there are people spraying fresh, clean, drinkable water on the sidewalks. While the City, its citizens, and its companies enjoy cleanliness, this is such a wasteful use of a very limited, but essential, global resource. I am confident that we can be just as neat and tidy through less water-intensive processes. Let's make watering sidewalks ILLEGAL, and let's try brooms on our sidewalks instead! Vote here if you agree.

Smart Roof program that reduces storm water runoff, energy use and carbon footprint
Make it the law that every new building in DC cover a large percentage of its roof (75% perhaps) with either solar panels, a green roof or a cool roof.

Tax the sale of plastic water bottles versus using tap water and own containers
Everyone knows about the scourge of plastic bottle pollution and litter. Fewer people know that most of the bottled water we buy (Dasani, Aquafina, VitaminWater, etc.) is recycled tap water with added minerals, fancy marketing, and a higher price. DC's tap water is of excellent quality and combined with a filter, tastes great. There is no need to pollute, waste money and energy producing tons of plastic bottles, and bottling what we already are getting for very cheap.

Daylight and Restore Foundry Branch
Much of Foundry Branch in NW runs through a stormwater pipe. By allowing it run above ground naturally, and rebuilding the streambed to slow the flow of the water, stormwater runoff can be reduced. Other opportunities to restore streams should be pursued as well.

WASA to create squads to demonstrate and promote use of water-conserving technologies.
WASA should organize teams capable of demonstrating rain barrels, pervious pavers, low-flow toilets, shower head and faucets to community groups on request. Groups committing to purchasing a certain quantity of devices would be entitled to a discount. Devices could be purchased through hardware, plumbing suppliers and appliance stores located in DC.
