  1. Transform RFK lots into public athletic fields and green space.

There is not enough space for youth and adults sports. DC should rip out the asphalt lots and replace with usable green space and fields. This would substantially reduce storm water into the Anacostia and provided needed facilities for residents.

        • Window Farming

Hydroponics is a technique for growing plants without soil that is up to 10x as efficient in its use of space and the productivity of the plants. Growing some portion of one's own food is a simple pleasure that can make a big difference in one's relationship with nature. As we choose nutrients to feed plants we hope to eat in turn, we gain experience with a nearly-lost fundamental human art, get a microcosmic view of the food system, develop a stake in the conversation, and come up with new ideas for how to take care of ourselves and our…

          • Get rid of styrofoam, non-recyclable plastics for take-out or to-go food

We've known styrofoam and non-recyclable plastics to be an environmental issue since the 1980s. The nation's capital should set an example on this and eliminate the use of these non-sustainable materials.

            • Go to a sustainabe foods program in our schools: Kids deserve to eat real food made from real ingredients.

Food represents 1/7 of our personal fossil fuel consumption and impacts our health in many ways. By getting real, local food (whole grains, fruits and vegetabls) into schools, it will have an impact not just on the environment, but also on the children's health.

                • Install rain gardens, curb cuts, and permeable pavement in streets and sidewalks to reduce stormwater runoff and recharge aquifers

By installing rain gardens, curb cuts, and permeable pavement in our streets, storm water runoff could be dramatically reduced. This would enhance drinking water quality, reduce pollution, reduce wastewater treatment volume, improve flora and fauna, and reduce flooding. These initiatives are realatively cheap and easy to implement durring the course of scheduled street maintenance. Many of these practices are currently being used in many local governments. More information can be found at EPA's Stormwater page http://cfpub.epa.gov/npdes/home.cfm?program_id=6

                  • Remove the existing asphalt on the Brent Elementary playground!

The Brent Elementary community has worked diligently with numerous city agencies over the past 6 years to green the outdoor spaces surrounding the school, located at 301 North Carolina Ave., SE. We've installed Butterfly Gardens, a perimeter Rain Garden, an Outdoor Classroom and new play equipment with a permeable soft surface. The blacktop left on the playground drains storm water directly into the sewer system. We want to create a beautiful, safe green field for our students and neighbors to play on!

                    • More options for people to ride bikes everywhere. Plus easier parking options for bikes

Put parking bars for bikes on every corner, near every big store, in front of Wilson building, etc. Also triple number of bike lanes, which will encourage novice riders to participate.

In collaboration with the community, plant urban farms with school children. This will enable DC's youth to not only learn grow healthy food but how to cook it as the produce can be used to fortify school lunches.

                        • The District should enter into Power Purchase Agreements (PPA)'s for Solar Power

There are numerous companies in the metro area and nation that pay to install and maintain solar panels on commercial rooftops. The owner of that rooftop (The District in this case) then gets to purchase the power thats produced at below market rates (Pepco in this case). The submarket rates are set for the duration of the PPA, usually 20 years.

                          1. So the District Government lowers its electricity bill every year.
                          2. It swaps out coal produced power for solar power. Very Green!
                          3. The District doesn't front one penny, the PPA solar companies pay for all the installation…

                          • Plant trees!

Trees are about the cheapest and easiest way to make the city more sustainable. Trees reduce air and stormwater pollution, improve human health, reduce urban heat island effect (thereby reducing energy consumption), and beautify the city.

                            • solar energy residential programs - a great investment for DC citizens

Re-create the great financial incentives that DC had a year ago for residential solar installations. There was tremendous growth in solar, which immediately reduces peak electricity load and greenhouse gases, and pays for itself in a few years - with a lifetime of 25 years or more! We have a PEPCO charge each month for a 'trust fund' that could fund lots more solar than it does. The federal tax credit and Renewable Energy Credits are great, but we also need a better DC rebate to help the working class afford solar panels.

                              • Stop watering sidewalks to clean them - use a broom!

Each time I walk to work in the morning, there are people spraying fresh, clean, drinkable water on the sidewalks. While the City, its citizens, and its companies enjoy cleanliness, this is such a wasteful use of a very limited, but essential, global resource. I am confident that we can be just as neat and tidy through less water-intensive processes. Let's make watering sidewalks ILLEGAL, and let's try brooms on our sidewalks instead! Vote here if you agree.

                                    • Utilize permeable pavement in parking lanes, alleys, parking lots, and sidewalks.

Permeable pavement allows stormwater to infiltrate into the soil and recharges groundwater. There are also permeable pavements that reduce air pollutants.

                                      • Incentivise Recycling: Downsize "Supercan" and Upsize Recycle Bins

DC sends the wrong message by providing residents with a huge "Supercan" trash bin and a tiny recycle bin. The sizes should be reversed. Larger recycling bins would encourage more recycling overall and would make it much easier to recycle flattened cardboard boxes. Presently, cardboard boxes don't generally fit in the little bins and must be stored undercover whenever it is raining or snowing, or simply put out with the trash. A system for collecting compostables should also be instituted.

                                        • Ban Bottled Water Use at DC Government Agencies

To help eliminate plastic water bottle waste and the use of fossil fuels and the emissions of heavy trucks on the roads in the District the DC Government should ban the purchase of bottled water. DC could switch to much more environmentally friendly filtered water systems and filtered water coolers. Like many cities and states have already done, DC could ban bottled water, save money and be a greener city.
